The Kentucky Derby is one of the oldest traditions in the Commonwealth and with the Run for the Roses comes excitement, anticipation, and plenty of yummy food.

The Derby began in 1872 and has since become the longest running sports event in the country. It has never been cancelled for inclement weather and Notable winners include Secretariat, Aristides, American Pharoah, and Seattle Slew. Complete list of winners.

The race doesn't only bring the best of the thoroughbred industry to Kentucky, but also all of its fans. On the first Saturday in May, fans will eat, on average, 142,000 hot dogs, 18,000 barbecue sandwiches, 13,800 pounds of beef, 32,400 jumbo shrimp, 9,000 scallops, 8,000 pounds of potatoes, 30,000 cookies and 300,000 strawberries.

Along with the food there are several traditions that only the Derby can bring. Visitors can expect to experience many hats, the garland of roses, celebrities, mint juleps, and the singing of, "My Old Kentucky Home," while being here.
